Practice Project - Self Portrait
Objectives:
1. Shoot 20 or more new photos.
2. Combine at least 2 of the photos in some way using photoshop.
2. Combine at least 2 of the photos in some way using photoshop.
Research:
What I like about the photos I found for research is the theme. I like the black and white on the first and third photograph, and also how the middle one has sharp, contrasting colors. I also like the element of nature in the middle photo with the lush greenery.
Raw Photos:
When I was shooting these photos, I didn't exactly have a clear idea of how I wanted the final piece to come out. I knew that I wanted to incorporate some element of nature, so I took a lot of pictures of this hibiscus plant in the school, as well as some other plants that I found indoors. I also tried to take pictures in reflective surfaces, for the self portrait part of this project.
Edits:
All of my edited photos are fairly similar. I layered a picture of leaves over each one, and also kept the base layer black and white. I tried different things with the color of the photos, especially the ones I overlayed. I changed saturation, opacity, hue, ect.

OBSERVE + DESCRIBE:
This is a photograph of a person (me) taking a picture of themself taking a picture in a car window. It also has a white border around the image. The photo is black and white and has a photo of the shadows of leaves layered over the first photo. This photograph is printed on glossy photo paper with a black mat.
ANALYZE:
In this photograph, there is a connection between the Element of Art 'Value' and the Principle of Design 'Pattern.' This connection is apparent in the photograph of the shadows that is layered over the first photograph. The black and white values give contrast to the shadows, creating a pattern. The pattern makes the photograph more interesting. Another connection can be made between the Element of Art 'Color' and the Principle of Design 'Unity.' This photograph is entirely in black and white. This lack of color gives the photo unity. The unity comes from the black and white nature of this photo, if one photograph was black and white, and the second one was colored, it would then create a contrast in the photo, instead of unity.
INTERPRET:
The idea for this photograph was to meet the objectives (shoot 20 or more photos, combine at least 2 of the photos using photoshop). Another idea was also to create a photograph incorporating the self portrait requirements, and nature. The second photograph is of the shadows that leaves made on the ground as the sunlight filtered through them, this was the nature component. The self portrait component was the person (me) taking a photograph in a reflective surface. The theme of this photograph is monochromatic and simple. The black and white coloring of the photograph gives the photograph monochromatic coloring and a simplistic feel and theme.
EVALUATE:
I think that this photograph turned out okay for it being the first project of the semester. I think that I accomplished what I set out to, which was to meet the objectives, and also make a photograph with a simplistic theme. I like how the pattern of the shadows adds more to the photo, instead of it just being a photograph of someone taking a picture in a mirror. The fact that this was a self portrait made this project more difficult because it can be hard to take a photograph of yourself. I think that this piece could be improved by having the self portrait component (part in photo where I am taking the picture in a mirror) be more unique. In the future, I hope to improve my photography and create unique photos.
