Artist Statement
Growing up, art was always something that was important to me. My Mom and I would make paintings and drawings using a wide array of materials such as watercolor, crayons, colored pencils, etc. In elementary school, I took an art class outside of school. In middle school, I was part of the GOAL art program at the Durango Arts Center. During 7th and 8th grade I took art classes in school. For my freshman year, I went to Animas High School, and was in the required art class, which was both digital and studio art combined. I think that this year, my sophomore year, has been really influential to me in terms of art. So far, this year, I have learned more technical skills as well as how to interpret others artwork better. The reason that I am motivated to study art is because it is something that has been in my life for a long time and it gives me creative freedom.
As an artist, my style varies from piece to piece. I like to use many different techniques as well as different mediums. Some of my favorite mediums to work with are watercolor and photography. I like watercolor because of how it can be used in so many different ways. As for photography, it is something that I am very interested in, and I have always wanted more experience with. The type of art that I prefer to make differs. Sometimes I like making abstract art, while other times, I like working with something more realistic. I really like to experiment with my art, and try things that I haven’t tried before. Overall, I think that my artistic style is very diverse.
Art is very purposeful to me because it provides a creative outlet as well as an ‘escape’ from the more structured parts of my life, especially school. To me, art is very freeing, it is very personal, yet it can be shared. I think that a world without art would be very bland. A world without art would lack creativity and would have less culture. My life would be very different if it was lacking art. I think that without art, I would be less creative, and also more close minded. As of now, I am unsure where I see art in my future, at least career wise. I do know that I want to continue making art for my entire life.
